What Is Walk and Talk Therapy?

We are all wired differently and work differently! That means for some folks, sitting on a couch in a therapy office or in front of a computer at home isn’t the most comfortable or accessible way to show up. For these sessions, we will meet in a public outdoor space and walk together for the duration of the time we have. There are unique factors to consider with this option, like what it means for confidentiality if we are meeting in a public space, or what to do if we see someone you know. These are important considerations, and we can navigate them together to ensure you have a solid understanding of how this format differs from what we might imagine as a typical setting for therapy, and to ensure there is informed consent regarding these differences.

There can also be unique benefits to this format. For some, conversation can flow more easily when side by side with another rather than face to face. It can feel helpful to pair therapeutic processing with somatic movement, particularly if both are priorities for you and it can feel hard to find the time for each in a day. And then there are the many benefits of being outdoors, the ways in which nature can be grounding and what it offers to the therapeutic process. The wisdom of the wilderness and nature are so important to my therapeutic practice, both personally and professionally, and I look forward to introducing others to all that we are offered when we learn to pay attention to the living world around us.

“When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
